Position summary

The Science and Assurance (S&A) Branch is responsible for leading the post-market regulatory functions of the Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority (APVMA), including chemical review, adverse experience reporting program (AERP), voluntary product recalls, and manufacturing quality and licencing (MQL) programs. The S&A Branch also manages agency functions including enterprise information management and science policy. The S&A Branch works closely with Agricultural Chemicals and Veterinary Medicines Branches to ensure regulatory tools and scientific approaches are contemporary and adaptive to new opportunities and risks. The S&A Branch also ensures that the APVMA staff and stakeholders have access to up-to-date guidance and instructional materials reflecting APVMA’s regulatory scientific approaches.
As part of the S&A Branch, the Science Assessments - Environment team plays a vital role in protecting Australia’s environment while supporting safe and effective agricultural and veterinary practices. As a Senior Evaluator in the Science Assessments - Environment team, you’ll work at the forefront of science-based regulation, analysing complex data, contributing to high impact environmental risk assessments, and helping shape technical policy that underpins national decision making.

The Science Assessments - Environment team is responsible for the following core functions:
- Technical assessment: Delivering robust technical assessments of environmental data for chemical reconsiderations by completing internal evaluations and managing external evaluations, including scoping, procurement of external scientific reviewers, and peer review. The team collaborates closely with the Chemical Review team to develop proposed and final regulatory decision reports.
- Cross-Functional Scientific Advice: Providing expert scientific guidance to other APVMA teams to support evidence-based decision-making.
- Technical guidance & Stakeholder Engagement: Developing and maintaining comprehensive guidance and instructional materials for environmental assessments. The team actively engages with domestic and international stakeholders to ensure the consistent interpretation and application of risk assessment methodology as needed.

Selection criteria
Essential
To be considered for these roles you will need the following essential criteria:
- Appropriate tertiary qualifications in environmental toxicology, environmental chemistry, or related sciences with a comprehensive understanding of agricultural and veterinary (agvet) chemical exposure and environmental risk assessment.
- Applied knowledge in Good Agricultural and Veterinary Practices and the APVMA’s regulatory framework, with demonstrated experience in translating complex environmental fate and ecotoxicology risk assessments into regulatory science reports and outcomes.
- Proficiency in contributing to the development of high-quality technical guidance and instructional resources, supported by a proven track record of engaging with internal and external stakeholders to ensure the consistent interpretation and application of regulatory decisions.
- High-level technical communication skills, including the capacity to review complex regulatory documentation and professionally represent the APVMA across diverse industry and stakeholder forums.
- Advanced analytical, problem-solving and project management skills, with a proven ability to evaluate complex information, provide pragmatic advice, and navigate both extensive datasets and significant data gaps to reach defensible regulatory decisions.
- Demonstrated interpersonal and collaborative skills, supported by a history of rapid technical adaptation and the ability to navigate high-pressure environments by managing multiple priorities to meet rigorous deadlines.

- Postgraduate qualifications in environmental toxicology, environmental chemistry, or related sciences with a comprehensive understanding of agvet chemical exposure and environmental risk assessment.
