Position summary

The Veterinary Medicines Branch at the APVMA is responsible for assessing and processing applications to register veterinary chemical products, approving active constituents for use in those products, and managing subsequent variations to existing records. The team also administers applications for short term permits, issues export certificates, and provides guidance and support to applicants and other stakeholders through the management of enquiries.

The Efficacy and Safety section ensures veterinary chemical products approved by the APVMA are effective and safe to the target animal species. Efficacy and safety evaluation of use patterns is conducted across a range of veterinary chemical products, including antibiotics, ethicals, immunobiologicals, nutritionals and parasiticides.  

The Senior Evaluator will evaluate assessments completed by External Scientific Reviewers, undertake Chemistry and Manufacture evaluations for immunobiologicals and assist other APVMA officers and External Service Providers undertaking assessments and review their recommendations. In undertaking this role, you will use your technical and regulatory expertise when peer reviewing external service providers reports and provide advice to internal and external stakeholders. You will also undertake high-quality scientific assessments and communicate the outcomes with respect to risks, solutions and regulatory objectives.

The Efficacy and Safety Senior Evaluator will support the Assistant Director in ensuring that guidelines and guidance documents relating to efficacy and target safety are contemporary and reflect international best practice; and assist in managing relationships with external service providers, internal and external clients to achieve regulatory outcomes.

Our Ideal Candidate / Selection criteria

To be considered for these roles you will need the following essential criteria:

  1. Demonstrated high-level written and oral communication skills, including the ability to prepare and present complex documents, ability to communicate clearly and confidently with clients, staff, and service providers to establish and maintain internal and external networks, and to represent the APVMA in a variety of forums. 
  2. Demonstrated high-level Research and Development and/or Manufacturing experience in an area related to pharmaceutical or veterinary and/or agricultural chemicals. 
  3. Demonstrated expertise and experience in the interpretation and evaluation of scientific data and information in an area relevant to chemistry and manufacturing technology of pharmaceutical active constituents and formulated products.
  4. Well-developed interpersonal, planning, organisational and teamwork skills, including the ability to determine workflow priorities and assume responsibility for delivery of organisational goals while maintaining a focus on quality and a cohesive team environment. 
  5. Ability to solve problems, pay close attention to detail, and make decisions based on sound science and risk analysis.
  6. Tertiary qualifications in veterinary medicine, biological sciences (e.g., zoology, immunology, biochemistry, pharmacology), or animal science.

The following desirable criteria will also be assessed:

  • Postgraduate qualifications in veterinary medicine/animal science, or a related biological science.
  • Demonstrated experience in efficacy and target animal safety and chemistry and manufacture assessment of immunobiologicals is highly desirable
