Position summary

The Agricultural Chemicals Program of the APVMA is responsible for the assessment of the safety, efficacy, and trade risk aspects of applications for the approval of chemical substances, registration of agricultural chemical products, and approval of permits to use a chemical for a specific purpose.
As part of the Agricultural Chemicals program, the Environment team focusses on:
- Managing all aspects of the environmental assessment of agricultural chemicals including the evaluation of data and risk assessments.
- Providing expert advice to other areas of the APVMA and external stakeholders on matters relating to the environmental safety aspects of agricultural chemicals.
- Establishing technical policies associated with the technical assessment of agricultural chemicals.
In the Evaluator role, you will have the opportunity to:
- Under supervision, prepare advice in relation to environmental safety assessments.
- Assist team members across the APVMA through the preparation of assessment reports, and provide technical advice to staff as required.

Our Ideal Candidate / Selection criteria
To be considered for these roles you will need the following essential criteria:
- Appropriate tertiary qualifications in environmental toxicology, chemistry, agricultural or animal science or any related biological sciences.
- Knowledge of, or capacity to develop, an understanding of the regulatory framework in which the APVMA operates in the assessment and approval of agricultural and veterinary chemicals.
- Demonstrated high-level communication skills, including the ability to prepare documents and reports, and communicate clearly and confidently with clients, staff and service providers, and to represent the APVMA in a variety of forums.
- Well-developed analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to evaluate, provide pragmatic advice and propose regulatory decisions on complex information.
- Demonstrated experience in the conduct of risk assessments particularly relating to the environmental safety of agricultural chemicals, in data-rich and data-poor environments.
- Well-developed interpersonal, planning, organisational and teamwork skills including the ability to determine workflow priorities and assume responsibility for delivery of organisational goals while maintaining a focus on quality and a cohesive team environment.
The folowing desirable criteria will also be assessed:
- Postgraduate qualifications in environmental toxicology, chemistry, agricultural or animal science or any related biological sciences.
