POSITION SUMMARY

The APVMA is seeking a highly experienced investigator as an Assistant Director at the EL1 level in the Office of the Chief Regulatory Scientist. The position is accountable under broad direction for performing a range of activities relating to delivering investigative, regulatory compliance, strategic, and coordination measures across the APVMA. The successful candidate will work within a framework of legislation, established principles, work practices and procedures in accordance with the APVMA’s mission and business objectives. They will work independently with complex material, having the authority and discretion to critically evaluate information from diverse sources and explore innovative approaches to support longer-term business objectives. 

The successful candidate will be a proficient manager and will report directly to the Director Assessments, Investigations and Monitoring.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

The Assistant Director will be responsible for: 

• Leading the enhancement of the APVMA’s Assessment, Investigations and Monitoring capability;

• Planning and leading complex investigations within a multidisciplinary team in accordance with APVMA and Australian Government policies, standards and administered legislation;

• Undertaking field work, compliance, investigations and enforcement activities; 

• Fulfilling their obligations under work health safety legislation;

• Assisting in the management of the Section, including staff development, training and support and initiatives across the Branch.

 

SELECTION CRITERIA

To be considered for these roles you will need: 

Essential

• Appropriate qualifications in Investigations, Law or a relevant field (e.g. Advanced Diploma Government (Investigations), Diploma Government (Investigations);

• Demonstrated experience planning and leading investigations and preparation of civil or criminal (ideally both) briefs of evidence;

• Previous experience liaising with internal and external professionals to resolve and complete assessments, make referrals and ensure positive outcomes;

• Experience preparing high quality written materials including briefs of evidence and complex briefings to senior management;

• Demonstrated ability to work flexibly and to plan, organise and prioritise a demanding workload, and to communicate priorities within the team;

• Willingness to abide by the APS Values, Code of Conduct and Employment Principles, and a demonstrated commitment to applying the principles and practices of WHS, equity and diversity in the workplace 

• Experience assisting peers and developing a team.

Desirable

• Experience representing an agency across jurisdictions, including internationally;

• Relevant experience with Australian primary production, investigations, project management, or in a regulatory environment will be highly regarded.
