Our organisation

The Australian Radiation Protection and Nuclear Safety Agency (ARPANSA) is the Australian Government's primary authority on radiation protection and nuclear safety. Our purpose is to protect the Australian people and the environment from the harmful effects of radiation, through understanding risks, best practice regulation, research, policy, services, partnerships and engaging with the community.

Section overview

The Primary Standards Dosimetry Laboratory (PSDL) provides calibration and measurement services to users of ionising radiation measurement equipment, including the Australian radiotherapy community. The section maintains the Australian primary standards for absorbed dose and air kerma, and disseminates these standards via calibrations for dosimetry equipment using X-ray and Gamma ray sources.

Primary purpose of the role

In this role you will perform a range of complex scientific tasks including the calibration of radiotherapy dosemeters against primary standards.  These measurements need to be undertaken to the highest possible metrological standard as they directly impact the quality of radiotherapy services provided in Australian clinics. You will be actively involved in the maintenance and execution of the quality system accredited by NATA to ISO 17025. You will work with a range of radiation sources ensuring that each is operating within well defined parameters. You will manage a number of concurrent projects and take ownership of the results. You will also need to communicate complex scientific concepts in written and oral form to internal and external stakeholders.
