Overview of the team
The Statutory Oversight team is responsible for providing expert advice on the application of statutory processes to business areas within Comcare.
Statutory Oversight actively promotes Privacy and provides legal advice to ensure that Comcare’s activities are consistent with the Privacy Act 1988. This includes delivering Comcare-wide privacy training, completing Privacy Impact Assessments and providing assistance to business areas on ad-hoc privacy issues.
The team is responsible for undertaking all of Comcare’s Freedom of Information functions and acts as Comcare’s liaison with the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner.
Statutory Oversight is also responsible for responding to subpoenas that Comcare receives and they facilitate administrative access to worker’s compensation claim information under the Safety, Rehabilitation and Compensation Act 1988.
Statutory Oversight also has integrity functions including receiving Public Interest Disclosures (PID) and co-ordinating PID investigations. They are also responsible for advising on corruption matters and for undertaking Commonwealth Ombudsman investigation matters.
Overview of the role
As the Principal Legal Adviser/Director Statutory Oversight you will lead work on a variety of engaging legal matters in a team with many different functions.
In this role your key responsibilities will include:
- Manage a coordinated statutory oversight function and meet all legislative requirements of relevant public law legislation;
- Provide strategic direction in leading the operational functions of the team and ensuring risk management for the agency in discharging those functions;
- Lead and manage staff including developing, coaching and mentoring;
- Establish and maintain key strategic internal and external stakeholder relationships to bring matters to resolution;
- Manage sensitivities and complexities within escalated matters and ensure that key stakeholders are appropriately advised and informed of relevant legal risk;
- With the Legal Group leadership team, contribute to the development and implementation of Legal Group business planning and risk management, which align with Comcare’s corporate planning and reporting framework.
Mandatory qualifications
- Undergraduate degree in law
- Admission as a legal practitioner of the High Court or the Supreme Court of an Australian State or Territory
- Minimum of 5 years post admission experience
- Current Practising Certificate

- Australian citizenship
- Character clearance (Australian Criminal History Check)
- Employee health declaration
- Six months probationary period for new engagements
