Overview of the Team

The Reconsiderations and Appeals team is responsible for the statutory reconsideration of Comcare claims decisions and management of Comcare’s response to Administrative Appeals Tribunal (AAT) applications and court appeals. The team works closely with the Senior Director, Claims, the Claims Operations teams and Comcare’s Legal Group to achieve positive outcomes for employees and employers.

Overview of the Role

The Assistant Director, Appeals leads a team with responsibility for litigation related to workers’ compensation claims. Working closely with Comcare’s Legal Group and legal service providers, the team operate as instructing officers for applications to the AAT and support litigation in the Federal Court. This role and the team advocate Comcare’s position in litigation, help manage legal and other risk, and collaborate to improve claims management through lessons learned. The Assistant Director, Appeals reports to the Director, Reconsiderations and Appeals and may manage team members across multiple sites.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Highly Desirable
    • Tertiary qualifications in law.
    • Experience in litigation, insurance or injury compensation environment.
  • Desirable
    • Experience working in a public sector context.

Eligibility and Specific Conditions of Employment

  1. Australian citizenship.
  2. Character clearance (Australian Criminal History Check).
  3. Employee Health Declaration.
  4. Six months probationary period for new engagements.
  5. Ability to obtain and maintain a Baseline Security Clearance. In some cases, a higher security clearance level may be required.
