Overview of the Team and role

The Statutory Oversight Team administers Comcare’s responsibilities under various public-sector legislation including the Freedom of Information Act 1982 (FOI Act), the Public Interest Disclosure Act 2013 (PID Act), the Privacy Act 1988 (Privacy Act), the Ombudsman Act 1976, and statutory reviews under the Work Health and Safety Act 2011 (WHS Act). The team is also responsible for receiving Public Interest Disclosures (PID) and co-ordinating PID investigations on behalf of Comcare.

The team provides effective risk and issues management through a co-ordinated strategic approach to Comcare’s statutory responsibilities by providing advice and support to Comcare on the application of statutory processes. 

The Statutory Oversight Team acts as Comcare’s liaison with the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner and the Commonwealth Ombudsman. 

The team is also responsible for managing Comcare’s escalated complaints and responding to subpoenas that Comcare receives. The team manages Comcare’s model litigant complaint assessments and provides risk advice on an ad hoc basis on emerging risks presenting across Comcare. 

The Assistant Director, Statutory Oversight is a highly developed specialist who works closely with the Director, Statutory Oversight to manage and co-ordinate complex complaints and provide guidance and people- oriented solutions to risks emerging for Comcare.  

Working under limited direction, the Assistant Director is responsible for: 

  • Assessing and managing complex complaints.
  • Liaising with and responding to enquiries and investigations by review bodies including the Commonwealth Ombudsman. 
  • Undertaking quality assurance across a range of matters for the team.
  • Training and developing junior staff.
  • Assisting with managing information release functions within the team and ensuring delivery of the function including decision making as required.
  • Working with the executive leadership of the team to assist to deliver initiatives.
