The Community Safety Branch (CSB) in the Place, Space and Communities Division develops and delivers independent, authoritative and accessible information and advice on natural hazards and their impacts. By improving the understanding of natural hazards and community exposure, we support stakeholders in Australia and the region in their risk mitigation and community resilience policy and action.
The Branch provides scientific expertise on severe wind events, severe wind hazard and provides severe wind impact information to internal and external stakeholders, including Australian Government organisations, disaster operations centres and international partner organisations. The Branch also develops models and tools to support a wide range of stakeholders to manage natural hazard risk. One of the flagship products from the Branch is the Tropical Cyclone Hazard Assessment (TCHA) for Australia which provides input into the Australian wind loading standard, provides advice and guidance to the insurance and reinsurance sectors on severe wind hazard risk, and informs public safety policies and programs at all levels of government.
This role will have accountability to undertake severe-wind hazard research, deliver high-quality advice on severe wind hazards for Australia and the region and contribute to the delivery of tools to ensure discoverability, accessibility of severe wind hazard, impact and risk data. You will need to be able to foster relationships with key stakeholders to achieve work area and agency goals.
Working under limited direction, in this role you will:
• contribute to delivery of the Australian Severe Wind Hazard Work Plan and Hazard and Risk Infrastructure and Applications Section priorities
• conduct complex scientific analysis of wind and climate data to improve future national-scale severe wind hazard assessments using a wide range of data sets and contemporary scientific methodologies
• provide accurate specialist advice on Australian severe wind hazards
• develop severe wind hazard impact and risk assessments for current and future climate, integrating scientific data and information from multiple sources
• communicate and explain scientific findings and work plan outcomes to internal and external stakeholders
• undertake effective data management to ensure integrity, interoperability, discoverability and reuse
• develop draft reports, briefing papers and other documentation for a range of purposes and stakeholders
• contribute to the development of team objectives for short term tasks and strategic planning for longer-term initiatives
• foster relationships with internal and external stakeholders to achieve work area and agency goals.
