Melbourne Girls Grammar is seeking to appoint a highly technical, autonomous and creative Art and Technologies Technician to support the respective Art and Technologies Departments at our Merton Hall Campus for Years 5 – 12. This position is full time, ongoing permanent position.
About the Role:
This role provides specialised technical and operational support to Art and Technologies faculty staff across painting, printmaking, ceramics, textiles, graphic design, and photography disciplines, ensuring the effective delivery of practical learning programs and studio-based activities.
You will be required to deliver technical assistance within art and textile studios, including troubleshooting, maintenance, and user support for sewing machines, overlockers, screen-printing equipment, photographic equipment, and other specialist tools. Supported students in the safe and effective operation of textile production equipment, diagnosing and resolving mechanical and operational issues as required.
Manage studio inventories, consumables, and equipment maintenance schedules while ensuring compliance with safety procedures and operational standards across all creative learning spaces.
This position is located in the Merton Hall Senior School Campus at 86 Anderson Street in South Yarra. The role is full time onsite Monday – Friday 8.00am – 4.00pm. The salary is as per Schedule 2C – Rates of Pay for School Assistants with Annual Leave of the MGGS Enterprise Agreement 2026. The salary range is between $80,340 and $91,503 plus superannuation.
Key Responsibilities:
- Maintenance, coordination and repair of equipment across art disciplines such as ceramics, textiles, photography, printmaking and graphic design.
- Preparation and maintenance of technical resources, including photography chemicals, darkroom equipment and specialist studio equipment.
- Maintenance of studio materials and technical preparation work, including screen-printing preparation, dyes, paints and specialist equipment.
- Co-ordinate logistical arrangements and technical preparation for art camps, gallery visits, museum programs, Top Designs excursions, workshops, industry visits and other off-campus learning activities.
- Technical support to staff and students in the use of Adobe Creative Cloud software including Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, Lightroom, as well as Z-suit for 3d printing and industry-standard design software used in Visual Communication Design, Product Design and Media.
- Source and procure textiles, trims, notions, patternmaking materials and specialist fashion production resources required for Product Design.
- Technical assistance in garment construction, pattern development, textile manipulation techniques, heat press applications, fabric printing processes and presentation of final design outcomes.
- Assist with installation, bump-in and bump-out activities for exhibitions and events.
Skills and Experience:
- Specialist skills in product design, photography, computer graphic design, ceramics, textiles, digital fabrication, visual communication design and creative technologies, printing and painting techniques.
- Demonstrated experience using Adobe Creative Cloud, digital design software, 3D modelling software, large-format printing systems, photographic production equipment and digital fabrication technologies.
- Demonstrated experience managing studio materials and equipment.
- Demonstrated knowledge of digital design workflows, visual communication principles, photographic production, exhibition installation and creative presentation techniques.
- Bring knowledge and skills to work with a diverse range of art forms and materials.
- Demonstrate the ability to be self motivated and pro active whilst carrying out general duties.
- Demonstrate efficient organisational and time management skills.
- Demonstrate a sound knowledge of the practical, theoretical and technical areas of a range of art and technologies areas
Qualifications:
- Tertiary qualification in the relevant field.
- Victorian Working With Children Check (Employee) is required prior to commencement.
- Driver’s licence to collect supplies and materials.
