Role purpose

The Museum has exciting opportunities for professionals who love working with the public, to join the Visitor Experience Team as a Visitor Experience Host. The Front of House team are a large, diverse, and creative team delivering high quality customer service in a fast-paced environment and engaging face-to-face interpretation. We do this through our people who are engaged in staff and volunteer roles.

This role significantly contributes to visitor’s engagement through delivery of information about our collections and programs, face-to-face interpretation, development and delivery of guided tours and talks, operation of displays and multimedia experiences, monitoring and promoting the safety and security of visitors and the collection, administration tasks including point of sale operation, processing bookings through a database and the promotion and sale of Museum products. 

Our visitors are diverse and include seniors, adults, children, families and access audiences who visit us in Canberra as independent travellers or in organised groups.    

Key accountabilities

  • Providing exceptional customer service to all visitors, ensuring welcoming, informative and engaging 
  • Delivering accurate and accessible information about exhibitions, collections, and public programs and tours.
  • Work in a large, culturally diverse team, in a creative, exciting, fast paced environment, where priorities shift and your ability to be flexible and adapt to change is paramount to your enjoyment in the role. 
  • Perform administrative duties including, answering the phone, operation of the point of sale and ticketing system and other administrative duties as directed.
  • Support guided tours and educational sessions including the design, set-up and logistics. 
  • Ensure the safety and security of visitors and exhibits, reporting incidents or hazards promptly and following the correct procedures.
  • Collect visitor feedback and observations contributing to service improvement and reporting any issues to supervisors.

This is a rostered position over a 28-day period including regular weekends, public holidays and occasional early mornings and evenings. This position requires large amounts of walking and standing on hard and soft surfaces.

Selection criteria

  • Demonstrated commitment to providing excellent customer service, including the ability to interpret and deliver information in an engaging way. 
  • Proven ability to work independently as well as part of a team.
  • Excellent customer service and communication skills with the ability to provide services to a diverse range of stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated ability to be flexible and make decisions under pressure.

Eligibility 

To be eligible to apply for this vacancy, applicants must:

  • be an Australian citizen

  • hold and maintain a valid ACT Working with Vulnerable People Registration
  • hold or be eligible to hold a security clearance at the level specified in the position description.
